No matter what part of the country or the world you live in, each geography has its own version of natural disaster that baffles the rest of the world. To those in the mid-west, the idea of an earthquake is terrifying. For those in the northeast, facing down a tornado may be equivalent to fighting off an alien invasion. For many, the horrible hurricanes of the west coast and south are unimaginable. But somehow, each population comes up with their own coping techniques. And that’s just as well because there is nowhere you can go avoid the possibility of natural disaster entirely.

Preparedness is the watchword in any part of the world when it comes to being ready when disaster hits. And for many parts of the country, that preparedness begins with how you construct your home. In some of the more hurricane parts of the east costs, homes are built on stilts so they can be above the water line if the sea blows in a bad storm. And out in San Francisco, the city is constantly upgrading its standards so the buildings are earthquake resistance after what happened to that town in the early twentieth century.

When you are building a new structure, the design of the structure can become much more disaster resistant if the walls are made of concrete rather than wood or other substances more susceptible to damage. This is especially true when you are preparing a home to resist fire, high winds such as come with hurricanes or even tornados. Those who have gone the concrete route in home construction in almost every part of the country have proven that this is one home construction specification that can vastly improve your chances of being virtually untouched by many of nature's disasters.

While using concrete as the primary building block of your home is a bit unconventional, you will be the envy of the neighborhood when bad weather comes around. A concrete structure may move in an earthquake but it is unlikely to fall. A concrete habitat might get smoke damage in a fire but it will not burn down. A concrete building will stand defiantly against hurricane and even resist any effort of a tornado to take it over the rainbow.

Another advantage of using concrete to build your home is that concrete is a natural insulation to keep your heat and cold inside. So your energy bills will be much more manageable. The biggest "sell" to going the concrete route might be the member of the family who wants a house that looks like everyone else's and can be decorated. But once you have the core concrete structure up, facades can be added to dress up the place and any other external or interior decorating you wish to employ can turn that very safe and efficient home into a showcase. But it will be a showcase that is far safer than any comparable structure.
